THE internet isn’t just about helping estate
agents to obtain national exposure for their properties.
According to a new survey by Rightmove, 62 per cent of those who moved five
miles or less use the web to help in their search.
Rightmove’s latest National Home Movers Survey showed a phenomenal 77
per cent of home movers viewed a property after finding it on the internet.
And it’s not just estate agents concerned with sales who are reaping
the rewards of internet advertising, letting agents are also getting in on the
act.
Seventy two per cent of tenants are using the internet to search for property
to rent and 89 per cent of landlords think it is essential to market their properties
online.
The latest research from Rightmove reinforces figures from the Advertising
Statistics 2005 which show that 52 per cent of homes in the UK have access to
the internet and 60 per cent of adults use the internet.
Miles Shipside, commercial director of Rightmove, said: “This latest
evidence reflects the nature of people’s lives today.

“Too many home movers simply don’t have the time
to trawl through papers and the high street, with many preferring to view property
from the convenience of their workplace/office or the comfort of their own home.
“Estate agents are recognising this growing trend, and many report receiving
the majority of their enquiries from the internet.
“This new evidence shows the internet is an integral part of any estate
agent’s advertising strategy giving their sellers and landlords national,
regional and local reach.”
Other findings of the survey included the fact that the main reason for moving
is to ‘upsize’, with 32 per cent of the homemovers surveyed giving
that as their main reason.
‘To get on the property ladder’ was the second most popular reason
at 17 per cent, with ‘personal reasons’ close behind at 16 per cent.
The Rightmove survey extended its brief to cover new build and international
property as well as lettings and found that 74 per cent of people who would
consider buying abroad would buy in Europe while, of the people who would buy
a new build house in the future, 69 per cent would use the internet to find it.
